                 Guidelines for Beginning Yoga Students

1.     Always do yoga postures with an empty stomach.  Postures can be practiced 3 hours from a full meal and 1 hour from a very small meal (e.g., toast and liquid drink).

2.     Bladder and bowels should be emptied.

3.     A warm bath before doing postures (especially in the morning) helps circulation and therefore loosens stiff muscles and joints.

4.     Yoga should not be practiced on heavy days of menstruation.  Any strenuous form of exercises should be avoided as not to upset the menstrual cycle.

5.     Notify your instructor of any serious illness, operations in the past four years, high blood pressure, heart trouble, eye or ear problems.  Certain postures should be avoided for certain conditions.  However, yoga becomes a preventive, not a curative, if practiced regularly.

6.     Decide whether you are a day or night person and do your practice accordingly; practice may come easier for “morning people” who practice in the morning and practice may come easier for “night people” who practice in the evening.

7.     Try to practice at the same time daily.  This will help you to form a habit.

8.     Practice in a well ventilated room.

9.     Yoga should be practiced on a firm yet not hard surface.  A bed is no place to practice yoga.  Always practice gently—no jerks.

10. Practice your yoga with patience, do not force yourself.  In the beginning the body may put up a resistance.  Remember, your body is happily aging and therefore it moans and groans anytime you want to reverse the aging process.  Yoga helps to make muscles more elastic and youthful; revitalizes cells by nourishing them with fresh oxygenated blood; massages internal organs and in general, helps purify the whole system.

11. It is important to do some warm-ups before doing postures to get the blood circulation through stiff joints and muscles.

12. Practice ten to fifteen minutes a day, everyday, and you will see benefits!!  Practice is the key to success!!!  Repeated concentrated efforts are necessary.

13. Do a total relaxation of all parts of the body after doing postures.

14. Always wear loose, comfortable clothing.

15. Remember, YOGA IS A NON VIOLENT practice.  DO NOT HURT YOURSELF!!!!  Listen to your body and stop just before a pain.
